When you’re determined, you work until you reach your goal
A Dream doesn’t become a reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. — Colin Powell
If you are determined to reach your goal, you will not procrastinate, you will never give up, you will keep working until you reach your goal. Some call it willpower. Some call it stick-to-itiveness. Others call is persistence. Some even call it stubbornness. Whatever you call it, this is an important attitude found in those who do succeed.
Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination — a commitment to excellence — that will enable you to attain the success you seek. — Mario Andretti
When you’re determined you don’t give up
The vision must be followed by the venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps — we must step up the stairs — Vance Harvner
This is one of my favorite quotations. Most students can picture themselves dashing up these stairs, eager to discover what’s at the top.
When a person is truly determined, they don’t let anything stop them. I remember my son with one foot in a cast, not using his crutches but hopping up and down steps when I had trouble with two feet..
I have bad knees. I’d stare up these steps and groan. I’d know how much work it would be to get up these steps. I’d be tempted to give up before taking that first step. I know how painful it would be. I’d soon be out of breath. Long before I reached the top, I’d be exhausted.
That’s what it’s like to have a vision or goal that you choose to work toward. You realize it can be a long difficult journey. But if we are serious, we WILL begin. It may take a long time to reach the goal, but we will begin today… not just sometime today, but immediately. And we will continue, whether slowly or quickly, moving forward to reach the goal.
I ran and ran and ran everyday, and I acquired this sense of determination, this sense of spirit that I would never give up, no matter what happened. — Wilma Rudolph
When you are determined, you decide what to do and do it.
He who deliberates fully before taking a step will spend his entire life on one leg. — An old Chinese Proverb
We all know students who make great decisions. They intend to read every chapter before class. They plan to finish every paper at least three days before it’s due. They are going to study the material as they go along so there will be no need to cram before exams. BUT, making plans isn’t enough. We need to act on our decisions.
We can all remember times when we sit down with a book and think of a few things we must do first. It’s the night to call home and talk to your parents. You suddenly realize you wore your last pair of clean underwear that morning. You decide to put some laundry in the washing machine. It will only take a few minutes. A good friend calls. Normally you’d ignore it, but your friend called three times today. Maybe it’s really important. …… It is amazing how many things we discover that we absolutely must do when it’s time to study.
The essential question is not “How busy are you?” but “What are you busy at? — Oprah Winfrey
This helps explain how Oprah Winfrey became such a success. She had big dreams and she worked hard, not distracted by little issues. If you have decided to do something, don’t wait, don’t put it off, don’t find something else you’d rather do first. Just do it.
The greatest time wasted is the time getting started. — Dawson Trotman
When you’re determined, you take that first step
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated failures. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. — Calvin Coolidge
Do not take these decisions lightly. Do not decide you will make an A in every class, that you will get an excellent education, or that you will lose 100 pounds unless you are willing to do all the work that req, unless you are prepared to struggle daily as I would struggle to climb these stairs.
The woman walking down the road alone realizes it won’t be easy to reach her destination, but step by step, she continues, determined to continue.
When you do make a decision, if you are prepared to follow through, you will discover that the trip, while difficult, can also be exciting. And when you reach your goals, you will say to yourself, “It wasn’t easy but I’m glad I did it.”
Let us not be content to wait and see what will happen, but give us the determination to make the right things happen. — Horace Mann
But, you might object, “I really can’t do it. I just don’t have the willpower.” And, while that might sound like a feeble excuse, it isn’t. Some people really do have more willpower. We aren’t sure what makes the difference, but I imagine it had to do with early teaching. But the differences are clear with four-year-old children.
But the Wonderful News, something we only learned recently, is that there is hope for all of us. Researchers has discovered a method we can all use that will increase our Willpower.
